Bulgarian Government Quits After Police Charge Protesters, Calls Its Prime Minister "A True Statesman"

The Bulgarian cabinet of the ruling GERB party resigned this morning after a night in which police launched a nationally televised indiscriminate charge into demonstrators in Sofia, injuring many.

The collapse of the government, predicted in this blog yesterday, came a day after Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's disingenuous warning to Bulgarians that protests risked the loss of subsidies from the European Union.

His resigning interior minister, who runs the police, immediately praised Borisov as "a true statesman."
